He had to think of a way to get Gisele to her flat quickly. So Tom Brady lied to his girlfriend and said her apartment was flooded. She rushed home in a panic to find the place strewn with rose petals and candlelight. Tom got down on one knee (which worried Gisele because he had just had surgery), and the rest is history. Still happily married, Tom and Gisele have two children together as well as Tom’s son from a previous relationship.
Gabrielle had no idea that the whole family was in on the proposal. After going out for brunch and returning home, Dwayne’s three sons held up a sign that said, “Nickie, will you marry us?” She turned to look at Dwayne, and he was down on one knee (on a yoga block because the house was under construction) with an incredible ring. She said yes, and the whole family cheered!
Kanye West doesn’t do things on a small scale. To propose to Kim, he borrowed a football stadium from the San Francisco Giants, hired a 50-piece orchestra to play her favourite song, and put the words “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!” on the venue’s Jumbotron. And just to make sure everything was perfect, Kanye bought three different custom engagement rings, finally settling on a 15-karat sparkler designed by Lorraine Schwartz.
What better place for the Dancing with the Stars dynamo to propose than on stage? During a performance of Sway at the Olympia Theater in Miami, an ecstatic audience got to watch the Ukrainian dance phenom kneel on the stage and say, “I’m in love with you, and I will be in love with you for the rest of my life.” She said yes, and the deal was sealed with a custom-designed Cantamessa engagement ring.
Most proposals go like this. A man gets down on one knee and asks his girlfriend to marry him. But that’s not how this one went. Reliably unconventional, Pink took matters into her own hands. During one of her motocross-racing boyfriend’s competitions, she stood on the sidelines with a whiteboard. The message said, “Will you marry me?” On the next lap, Hart sped right up to Pink and dropped out of the race to kiss his future wife.
Even celebrities get nervous when it comes to proposals. Katy knew something was up when Orlando showed up clean-shaven and without his customary trainers for their Valentine’s date. After dinner at an Italian restaurant, he whisked her away for a helicopter ride, high above the city lights. As he struggled to get the ring box and love note out of his pocket, he ripped his jacket and knocked a bottle of champagne over. Fortunately, she said yes, and family and friends congratulated them at the landing pad after the ride was over.
Looking for a storybook proposal idea? Matthew Koma suggested going for a walk in the park on a random Tuesday evening. Hilary said she was tired, but he insisted. Once they got to the park, Matthew handed her an illustrated book containing the story of their relationship. When she got to the last page, there was a little compartment that peeled away to reveal a gorgeous solitaire. He got down on one knee, and they lived happily ever after.
McConaughey recounted his proposal story on the Jay Leno show. “During Christmastime, we go around as a family, and everyone gets their turn to open presents,” McConaughey said. “I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep so she’d have to keep opening boxes to get to it. And because we go around and swap out and take turns on who’s opening presents, she had to get skipped the last 15 times. She kept going, ‘Why can’t I open that present?’ And I said, ‘You have to wait till the end.’ Finally, I get to her, and I’m calling my family over ... and her eyes go wide and I take a knee and I said, ‘Will you marry me and take my name?’”
Get your hanky for this one. Although Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are mum about the details of their proposal, they say it was casual and in a low-key setting. We do know, however, that there were plenty of tears. Access Hollywood reported John’s side of the story. “She did cry after I cried and we cried, and then everyone around us was crying,” John explained. “Then, I think people weren’t really sure what was going on, but they were crying because we were crying.”
These two don’t mess around. Julie Roberts and Daniel Moder may hold the record for the shortest engagement ever. They invited friends and family to their New Mexico ranch for an Independence Day celebration. To kick off the festivities, Moder got down on one knee and proposed. Roberts replied, “Yes, yes, yes,” and they tied the knot that very evening with all of their friends and family still present. No sense stringing it out, right?
